  • Why I Chose a Wellness Retreat Over a Typical Beach Vacation — and Never Looked Back

I used to think a holiday meant cocktails by the pool and late mornings in bed. Don’t get me wrong — I still love a sea view and a fruity drink — but after years of coming back from vacation feeling just as drained as when I left, I knew I needed something more intentional. That’s when I discovered wellness retreats.

It wasn’t about giving up comfort — quite the opposite. My first retreat was nestled in nature, with elegant minimalist design, locally sourced cuisine, and private villas that felt like a dream. But what set it apart was the way everything was designed to restore you — body, mind, and spirit.

Each morning started with sunrise yoga and gentle breathwork, followed by a breakfast that somehow managed to be both nourishing and indulgent. I didn’t feel like I was restricting myself. I felt like I was finally feeding myself — the right way.

One of the unexpected highlights was the spa. I always thought massages were just for sore muscles or luxury indulgence, but here they were part of a deeper wellness philosophy. My therapist took time to understand what my body needed, and I came out of each session feeling more present and open — not just relaxed. For anyone curious, places like Kiyora Spa in Chiang Mai really exemplify this approach, combining expert treatments with mindful, restorative experiences.

Beyond the treatments and classes, what truly transformed me was the pace. There was no rush, no loud music blaring from a poolside speaker. Instead, I wandered through gardens scented with lemongrass and plumeria, sipped herbal tea with staff who felt more like hosts than hotel employees, and sat with my thoughts in a way I rarely do at home.

One afternoon, I joined a wellness cooking class — not something I’d ever imagined doing on vacation. But learning how food could heal and energize was eye-opening. I’ve taken some of those simple habits home, and they’ve become little rituals that help me stay grounded even during my busiest weeks.

Since then, I’ve made a habit of choosing destinations that prioritize wellness — not just in name, but in experience. Places where attention to detail, personalized care, and a genuine connection to local culture come together in a way that leaves you better than when you arrived.

If you’re feeling run down, or just uninspired by the usual vacation options, I can’t recommend a wellness-focused escape enough. You don’t have to give up luxury — you just get to redefine what true luxury actually feels like.
